41 minutes, 10 tracks written with unerring skill by KB herself.  A lot, lot of cds come through my hands.  So believe me when I pay this cd the supreme compliment by stating that KB's cd has to rank in the top 1% of all submissions I receive.  Ravishing and touching, and that’s all you need in an album. more...

"A fine, fine debut by this Vancouver singer/songwriter. Bishop has a gorgeous voice which plays storyteller through 10 very interesting songs. Boy does she know how to write a hook too.

"Katrina Bishop is a brilliant songwriter from Vancouver, Canada. With "Runaway Lane" she has produced a fullhouse-project!"

"...An excellent collection of songs. I must admit I keep going back to Tracks 7 through 10. Just sensational. Knockout performances, one after the other. Your"club jazz" side is right up there in the top league of, say, Concord and Verve label artists. We're proud and priviledged to give your songs air-play here downunder."
- Eddie O'Strange -Town & Country Radio - New Zealand - October 2002

"We've had time to listen to your album "Runaway Lane" thoroughly, and we must tell you that you have gained two new fans in Japan. We love your music. We would like to introduce not just one or two songs from the album, but as many as we can at one time, so that our listeners will get a feel of the Katrina Bishop world."

"One year after Sept.11 there were many reports on our television of what had happened one year ago. I just had watched one of these broadcasts and was still in a sad mood when I listened the first time to the Acoustic Rainbow Sampler and to your song. Your song made me shiver, I got tears in my eyes! It was overwhelming!! I played that song that same week on my show and a lot of listeners said the same."

The Vancouver Sun  -  Saturday, January 26, 2002

Vancouver singer-songwriter Katrina Bishop goes for a big sound on Runaway Lane, usually putting at least five musicians to work on each track.  The big-scale production works, although when she scales things down (accompanying herself on piano for Nothing Could Be Better, singing a cappella on Good Night For Stars ), the songs are that much more effective.  Blessed with a clear, strong voice and capable of writing words and music that resonate, Bishop has the complete package.  Special mention goes out to Budge Shacte and Tony Koch for their guitar playing on the title track, and to Blaine Dunaway, whose violin enriches Blushing Bride.

I spend a lot of time trying to pin down the differences between an indie CD and the ones put out by the labels. If you're going to argue that indies are just as good or better, than you need to be able to see the differences, and similarities, between the two. I'm always looking for 'those ingredients' the differentiate the two. Sometimes it's as simple as packaging.. or audio quality.. or talent. I've heard extremely talented people who's work is dulled because of production or some other lack of resource. But there are CDs that blur that line so well that you couldn't tell a CD put out by an indie artist wasn't released by a record company who sunk hundreds of thousands (a million?) of dollars and 4 months of studio time into it.

I could kick myself when I review CDs like Runaway Lane by Katrina Bishop because I wasn't listening to them long ago. The only thing I have going for me is that this is her first solo project. I hesitate to call any CD perfect but if there's an indie graduating class, Katrina is in it with honors.

The CD opens with Blushing Bride, perhaps not the best track on the CD but enough to draw you in and keep you there. The songwriting skills are apparent from this point forward.. articulate and interesting. I was thinking about women like Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell (to some extent) and most of the Lilith Fair bunch.
Betcha Didn't Even Know is one of my fave tracks on the CD. This ballad-ish rock tune builds incredibly with tremendous electric guitar work walking you through the song. The chord progressions in this song are so strong.. almost haunting. It's wonderful.
Nothing Could Be Better slows and calms.. a gentle break from the previous two cuts with subtle piano backing. Runaway Lane picks up with a Latin feel and some more VERY appealing acoustic guitar work. The arrangements and instrumentation on this CD are magnetic.
We move thru The Master to come to Good Night For Stars, another of my favorites with it's a-capella harmonies in traditional Celtic form.
Sally's Room is airy, light and breezy as it brings us into Mr. Jealousy. This cut takes on a slow blues/jazz feel that puts me into my imaginary night club of long ago.. smoky room, baby grand with a candelabra on it, woman in a long dress singing a jazzy lullaby that you can wrap up in.. and, of course, the cool horn blowing riffs that travel out through the night air like a beacon to the soul.
Wanna Be is a light, upbeat jazz track that breaks into a chorus that makes me think of my grandfather's Irish Rovers albums (remember those?). Laying Celtic reel choruses over a jazz piece works incredibly well. That carries us further on and up to the final track, Sweet Promises, another very enjoyable track to finish a very enjoyable CD.

The production, performance and everything else about this CD is superb. Is it perfect? Well, you'll never hear me saying it. But I'll put this up against any non-indie CD. And on top of that, I'd put Katrina up against 95% of their current rosters. Now, in all fairness, I have to give credit to the musical talents of Brad Turner, Miles Hill, Tony Koch, Randall Stoll and Michael Creber. Their backing on these tracks is priceless. But it all wraps around one very, very talented lady named Katrina Bishop.

So.. In case you haven't caught on yet, go buy Runaway Lane!
